How to Conjugate Rendre
- 1). Identify the verb ending. The conjugation of a regular French verb depends on its ending. Verbs which end in "-ir" conjugate differently from those which end in "-er" or "-re." In the case of "rendre," the ending is "-re."
- 2). Remove the ending from the verb, leaving the stem. Removing "-re" from "rendre" gives us "rend" as the stem of the verb.
- 3). Apply endings to the stem. For regular "-re" verbs like this one, the endings are je: -s; tu: -s; ile/elle/on: no ending; vous: -ez; nous: -ons; ils/elles: -ont. Thus, for example, "I give back" is "je rends," while "we give back" is "nous rendons."
- 4). Apply tense endings if necessary. If the verb is in another tense, the endings will be different, and may include auxiliary verbs, but they will still be applied to the same stem. Where an auxiliary verb is present, it, not the main verb, is conjugated. Thus, in the pluperfect, "you had returned" is "tu avais rendu," while "we had returned" is "nous avions rendu." The auxiliary verb, "avoir," is conjugated, not "rendre," which always keeps the same ending, "-u."
