How to Get on Disability in Texas

7
    • 1). Before applying for disability in Texas you must first decide if you qualify. The qualifications to be defined as "disabled" as per the government are as follows:

      * You must not be working a job where your monthly average income is more than $1000 a month.
      * If you are not working, your disability must be considered "severe" by the government. To be considered severe you must not be able to perform normal work activities. This includes not only work activities you have done in the past but ANY work activities. For instance, if you were a construction worker before, your disability might not allow you to continue on with construction work, but you might be able to perform a desk job such as working at a call center and thus you are not considered to have a "severe" disability.

    • 2). If you believe you qualify for disability in Texas, it is time to begin the application process. You can do this online by going to the Social Security Administration's online application that is linked at the bottom of this page in the resources section.

If you are unable to turn in an application online, you can request an application or schedule an appointment with someone at the Social Security office by calling 1-800-772-1213.

Alternatively, you can contact a lawyer to help you with your claim. It is generally recommended that you wait for your first or second appeal before contacting a lawyer unless your situation is extremely bad.

    • 3). If you turn in an application online, you will be given a "reentry number" and a "confirmation number". Be sure to save these where you will be able to get them again, because you can later use them to check on the status of your disability application or update your application.

    • 4). Once you have turned in your Texas Disability application, it's time to sit back and wait. Be on the lookout for phone calls and/or letters in the mail. Stay on top of every request the Social Security Administration makes of you. Make copies of everything you turn in and save them for your personal records.

    • 5). Most people who file for disability are denied the first time (and often the second time). This is normal. If you are denied, you will need to fill out an appeal. To do this online, visit the second link in the resources section at the bottom of this article. You should fill out an appeal as soon as possible after being denied; if you wait too long you will need to start over.

    • 6). If you have any questions about your Texas disability application, you can contact the toll free number to Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 Monday through Friday, 7am to 7pm.
