How to Apply for Danish Citizenship

10
    • 1). Confirm that you do not automatically qualify for Danish citizenship. In certain circumstances, automatic citizenship can be obtained at birth, if the parents marry after the child's birth, or if a person is adopted as a child under 12 years of age. Citizenship may also be obtained by declaration for nationals of another Nordic country -- these being, Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Iceland.

    • 2). Obtain an application form for citizenship by naturalization. An application form can be printed from the Danish Ministry of Refugee, Immigration and Integration Affairs website or obtained from any police station in Denmark.

    • 3). Ensure you meet all the eligibility requirements. Applicants must sign a declaration swearing allegiance and loyalty to Denmark and the Danish society, and declare their willingness to observe and respect the country's legislation and principles of law. Applicants must also renounce any previous nationality, hold a permanent residence permit and live in Denmark for nine consecutive years. They must not have been convicted of certain criminal offences, not have any outstanding debts to public authorities, and demonstrate that they are financially self-supporting.

    • 4). Pass the Danish citizenship test and a Danish skills examination. Applicants must pass the Danish 3 Examination from a Danish language center, or an authorized agency -- or complete a lower secondary school-leaving examination. A Danish citizenship test must also be taken to demonstrate knowledge of Danish society, history, and culture. Citizenship tests are held in June and December.

    • 5). Submit your completed application form and fee to a local police station. Applicants must include original certificates proving completion of Danish skills and citizenship tests, a signed declaration swearing allegiance to Denmark, and other supporting documents to demonstrate that all eligibility requirements are met. Police will examine the applications and supporting documents before forwarding the file to the Ministry of Refugee, Immigration and Integration Affairs.
