How to Use the Presser Feet for Sewing

2
    • 1). Choose the presser foot best suited to your needs. One of the best feet for multi-purpose sewing is the zipper foot. This foot allows for both straight stitching and zigzag stitching. For specific tasks, however, you might choose a specialty foot for quilting, making a buttonhole or hemming an edge. If you are sewing two different types or weights of fabric together, consider using a walking foot, which is designed to sew multiple layers of fabric at the same rate, avoiding puckers and uneven seams.

    • 2). Remove the current foot from your machine, if necessary, according to the instructions for your make and model. Some machines require you to loosen a screw to remove the foot; most manufacturers provide a small screwdriver with the kit that comes with the sewing machine. For other machines, all you have to do is snap the foot on and off.

    • 3). Attach the selected foot to your machine. Remember to switch back to your multi-purpose foot when you have completed your task. Some specialty feet can be used for only one task and can cause problems if you try to use them for other sewing. For example, a quarter-inch presser foot is convenient for maintaining an even seam allowance with a straight stitch, but switching to a zigzag stitch will result in a broken needle.
