Breaking Up Advice: The Signs That a Breakup May be Coming

1
Ever been through a serious breakup, or are you going through one right now? If so, you know just how painful they can be. Looking back at the relationship long after the breakup, you are probably able to more clearly see some of the signs that things were going wrong - including some you had never noticed at the time.

Keeping those signs in mind as you move forward in life (and love), you will be better-equipped to avoid future breakups. And, knowing more about what went wrong can help you get back together after a breakup. Here are some of the signs to look for that indicate you may be on the road to a breakup.

One strong sign of an impending breakup is a reduction in the frequency of the physical contact between the two of you. And, I am not just talking about the sex: if the general rhythm of the physical side of your relationship seems to have changed lately, this could be a sign that you need to watch out for a possible breakup.

A split in your relationship may be on the horizon your partner stops holding your hand for no apparent reason. Or, if he or she stops putting an arm around your shoulder when you are out in public, such as while at the movies or a restaurant, that could be a sign of changes to the way you feel about each other. In fact, any sudden or marked changes involving a lack of touching - especially when your partner used to be very physically affectionate - is something to take note of.

Of course, what bodes even worse for your relationship than just a lack of touching is if you notice that your partner actually becoming uncomfortable at your touch: this definitely warrants a talk about what might be going on. If you notice your partner actually backing away from your physical touches or advances, it might be tempting to rationalize it away as not being a big deal. But, resist the temptation to rationalize: instead, find out by asking him or her directly. It could be nothing at all, but if you do not bring it up they probably won't either.

Another sign to watch out for in terms of changes to your partner's behavior is if you notice them lying to you now and then. Lying, even small or harmless ones, could be a sign of problems. After all, if a lie is so small and harmless, there should be no reason to tell it in the first place, right? Where there's one tiny lie, larger and more severe or dangerous lies can soon follow if left unchecked.

Of course, changes to your partner's behavior do not necessarily mean you are facing a breakup. But, wouldn't you like to be sure? Communication with your partner is the key to getting to the bottom of what is really going on.
