Why You Shouldn"t Lick Your Lips - Ever!

17
We all know that dreaded feeling when our lips start to feel dry and cracked.
Typically this is when you frantically try to find some kind of chap stick before it gets any worse.
Usually, the chap stick doesn't help.
This is when we are most tempted to lick our lips for some shred of comfort.
Why is this so bad for our lips? Why should we avoid this at all costs? While licking the lips might bring some comfort at first, that comfort doesn't last long.
Soon after licking the lips, you feel the need to lick them again, or do/find something to bring relief to your now aching lips.
And after a few minutes of repeating this routine, your lips are now burning and getting ever drier.
Licking the lips is a very short-term, temporary fix.
It's never worth it! Licking the lips usually gives us a small sense of relief, but in reality it is actually making the problem much worse.
This is because our saliva contains digestive enzymes, and when we lick our lips these enzymes will start breaking down the skin barrier of our lips.
This is often described as a burning feeling.
Not only that, but saliva evaporates very quickly, usually drying out the skin further.
What makes all this even worse is how easily licking the lips can become a habit.
It's a destructive cycle, and one that is all too easy to start.
It starts with chapped lips, then a quick licking to bring relief, quickly faded relief, another lick, more pain and need of relief, etc.
The cycle is very self-destructive, and will only damage your already fragile lips.
Part of what makes this an easy habit to start is the lack of effectiveness in your lip treatment process.
If you are using ineffective chap sticks, for example, then you are likely to try something else to quickly get that relief you are so desperately looking for.
And since you are already in the habit of licking your lips (and it's just so horribly easy to do), you are likely to revert to this destructive habit.
If you can find a truly effective natural emollient for your lips, it will make breaking this habit all the easier, while bringing lasting relief to your blighted lips.
If you are in the habit of licking your chapped lips for relief, the best thing you can ever to do get rid of chapped lips is to stop licking them! You'll be amazed at how much they'll improve once you break this nasty habit.
It will take some discipline, but the results are well worth it.
