Aside from feeding and caring for the dog an owner has to put up with the rather quaint characteristics of the dog.
Dogs bark.
While some dogs are relatively quiet, some breeds are natural barkers.
This is one of the reasons why many dogs end up in shelters.
There are many reasons why dogs bark.
Barking is a form of communication used by dogs to understand each other.
The growling and a low rumbling woof of a German Shepherd may be telling a Bichon Frise to stop its boisterous play and the yip yip may be the toy dogs way of saying "Sorry, big guy, I didn't mean to disturb your sleep".
Since we humans do not understand dog communication, it helps a lot to understand the meaning a dogs bark.
Why is this dog barking so much? Oftentimes owners are vexed by the dogs incessant barking.
You love your dog but there are times when you want to bind the dogs mouth with tape to stop it from barking.
Obviously you should not do that.
The dog may be barking because it wants to attract your attention.
You may have forgotten to fill its water bowl or it has been days since you took the pet to the dog park.
Bored dogs have the tendency to develop destructive behavior.
Some will dig or chew furniture and others will bark incessantly.
When your pet barks it may be trying to communicate its discomfort.
Dogs that are chained outside the home may be cold, hot or wet from the rain.
The dog may be hungry, thirsty or it may just not want to be alone.
The dog may want to go outside to do its business.
The pet is just being considerate.
It does not want to have an accident in your carpet.
A dog will bark to warn its master of the presence of strangers.
Dogs are territorial animals.
They bark at other dogs, at other animals, at the postman and at the meter reader.
They will even bark at cars that pass on what is considered to be its territory.
Some owners actually choose a barking breed, especially if the dog is to be utilized as a watch dog.
The bark would not be annoying if it is done by the pet to welcome the master.
Barking though, when it developed into a behavioral problem will certainly annoy not only the master, but also the neighbors.
Owners should then try understand the reason for the barking and need to find ways to correct the dogs barking habit.
