Built-Ins

• The 1960s ushered in clever built-ins, including shelving units built into nooks in the wall, hidden cabinets and pieces of furniture that slid open to reveal storage space. Even the kitchen table was often built in, diner style, with vinyl-covered benches anchored to the walls and the table bolted to the floor.
  
  

Furniture

• The well-kept 1960s home was neat and tidy. Everything, from the exterior with its freshly mowed and trimmed lawn, to the interior with minimalist-style furniture with clean lines, spoke of order. The style was simple and unfussy. The ornamentation of the Victorian era had been completely erased as people looked for simple function in their rooms.
  
  

Textiles

• Drapes and accent pillows were made of fabric with bold, geometric shapes for maximum visual impact. Colorful oranges, browns and golds were the colors of the day. Indian saris were re-purposed to become wall hangings, curtains, bedspreads, and throw pillows.
  
  

Flooring

• Shag rugs became a popular decorating choice in the 1960s, as did vibrantly hued area rugs from Morocco and India. Families covered their hardwood floors with wall-to-wall carpet and replaced linoleum with no-wax vinyl floors.
