Megan's Law Registration Process
- States vary on details regarding the registration process for compliance with Megan's law. All states, however, require that a convicted sex offender register with local police departments each time the offender moves to a new home address. In some states, this information is made available to the public on the Internet.
- People convicted of sex offenses must register with the local police department where they live when released from jail or prison. Each local police department should be contacted by the offender so the appropriate forms can be acquired. Offenders are not required to register with police, however, when they travel to other locations, even for long periods of time.
- Under Megan's Law, if a conviction was dismissed, a person convicted of a sex offense must still register with local police departments. The dismissal does not negate the registration requirement.
