How to File My 2006 Tax Return
- 1). Download IRS form 1040, applicable Schedules and instructions for the 2006 tax year.
- 2). Review your records for the 2006 calendar year and organize all documentation of income and expenses.
- 3). Determine the transactions in 2006 that created tax deductions against your income. Look for records that may support a tax deduction or an exemption.
- 4). Find all tax-reporting documentation you received such as 1099s and W-2s. Contact the institutions in question if you cannot locate the records. The IRS also has copies of these documents and can forward you copies.
- 5). Complete IRS form 1040 for the 2006 tax year and all appropriate schedules.
- 6). Calculate the refund that may be due you. If you are entitled to a refund, you will not be penalized for filing late.
- 7). Calculate the interest and penalties that may be due. Interest and penalties are based on the amounts that you owe for the 2006 tax year.
