    • Colleges in Kentucky have a longstanding tradition of providing education opportunities in the bluegrass state since the end of the Civil War. Kentucky has a range of colleges, large and small, that offer a range of undergraduate and graduate degrees. Some colleges offer substantial support for veterans and veterans' families as well as for undergraduates who join the Army ROTC.

    University of Kentucky

    • With 93 undergraduate degrees, 66 Ph.D. programs, a law school, 13 libraries, two cultural centers, 23 residence halls and the Coldstream Research Campus, which hosts teams from national pharmaceutical and biotech companies, the University of Kentucky (UK) is the state's flagship land-grant university with over 27,000 students and one of the state's largest employers. More than 70 of its degree-granting departments are nationally ranked, including communication, geography, Hispanic studies, pharmaceutical sciences, and psychology. Incoming freshmen should demonstrate their preparedness for college level work with four years of English and three years of science, mathematics and social studies. High school transcripts should also show two years of foreign language and electives that reflect an interest in history, visual arts and computer literacy. In 2008, the median high school GPA for incoming freshmen was 3.5. In 2009, the mean ACT score for incoming freshmen was 24.7. UK accepts students with a GED. UK offers many scholarships for achieving incoming freshmen. Those with an ACT score between 26 and 27 or with a combined M and CR SAT score between 1170 and 1240 with a 3.3 high school GPA will be awarded the freshman year Flagship Scholarship without applying. Those with slightly higher scores will be awarded the Provost Scholarship without applying. There are many other competitive, departmental and diversity scholarships available as well.

    Morehead State University

    • Morehead State University (MSU) offers 78 undergraduate degrees, 8 associate degrees, 51 graduate degrees, 42 non-degree graduate programs designed for professional educators, an online MBA and a master's degree for physician assistants and social workers in cooperation with the University of Kentucky. Classes are offered at the Morehead campus as well as at regional campuses in Ashland, Jackson, Maysville and other locations. MSU hosts the Equine Health Education Center, which benefits its veterinary technology, equine science and animal science students. To foster mentorship, MSU supports the Undergraduate Research Fellowship for students who have an ACT Comp score of 24 or higher or a GPA of 3.0 or higher to be paid to work with faculty on a scholarly project for up to 15 hours a week for up to four renewable years. MSU also offers a Veteran Outreach Program to facilitate veterans as well as their families' educations. There are also many scholarships earmarked for veterans. MSU's Army ROTC also provides full tuition and living expenses scholarships for incoming freshmen.

    Kentucky Wesleyan College

    • Kentucky Wesleyan College (KWC) offers 36 undergraduate degrees and 11 preprofessional programs to fewer than 900 students. Its small size provides students with personalized instruction. Working within the tradition of the United Methodist Church, KWC has offered degrees since the end of the Civil War, at first as a training school for preachers and now as a liberal arts college for everyone with a Center for Business Studies. KWC has many scholarships for incoming freshmen that are based upon high school GPA as well as ACT and SAT score. The James Graham Brown Scholarship provides full tuition for four years. All applications for admission are judged individually, including testing scores, GPA and extracurricular activities. Those who do not meet admission standards but are reviewed favorably can be accepted with qualification.
