How to Obtain a License Plate in Washington
- 1). Check the state vehicle requirements and confirm that your vehicle meets the criteria to be registered. Depending on the model year and type of your vehicle, you may be required to meet emissions standards, present an Odometer Disclosure Statement, or other documentation of the ownership or condition of your vehicle.
- 2). Get an emissions test if it is required by your county. If you live in Clark, King, Pierce, Snohomish or Spokane counties, your vehicle must have an emissions test every two years. Certain hybrid vehicles and vehicles model year 2009 or newer that meet California emissions standards are exempt from this requirement. Emissions test results are sent directly to the Washington Department of Licensing.
- 3). Fill out the Vehicle Certificate of Ownership Application. If you are submitting your registration application by mail, this form must be notarized. If you are registering the vehicle in person, you can fill out the form at the licensing office and show your driver's license or identification card to the licensing agent.
- 4). Pay the fee to register your vehicle. The fee varies depending on where you live and the type and weight of your vehicle. In 2010, the fee for a first time registration starts at $43.50. Some counties charge inspection fees, excise tax or agent fees on top of the basic registration charge.
