How to Change the String on a Grass Hog Trimmer
- 1). Turn off the trimmer and remove the battery from the engine. Flip the trimmer upside down to work on the spool.
- 2). Locate the two release tabs on the outside of the spool cover. Press them in while pulling up on the spool cover. The spool cover should slide off.
- 3). Take off the spool retainer from the hub and remove any old remaining string.
- 4). Thread 1/2 inch of new string through the anchor hole in the spool retainer. Hold the string with your thumb and pull the rest of it through the slot in the center of the spool retainer.
- 5). Wind the string around the spool, following the arrow on the spool retainer. Make sure the string is wound smoothly and uniformly across the retainer, and that there are no kinks or "X's" in the line. Wind the string until the spool retainer is almost full.
- 6). Thread the string through the eyelet hole in the spool hub while pushing the spool retainer down into the spool hub. Make sure the side with the notch in the spool retainer is exposed.
- 7). Push the spool retainer all the way down into the spool hub until it clicks into place. Refit the spool cover over the spool retainer; plug in the battery to start trimming again.
