How to Draw a Tucan on a Branch
- 1). Browse through a collection of toucans until you find one positioned on a branch in the way desired. A picture of a toucan perched on a branch will assist you in the drawing, from the colors and proportions to the shading and contrast of the picture.
- 2). Sketch out the head and beak of the toucan on the drawing pad. Draw a small circle with the shape of the beak extending outward from this. Use light pencil marks until you are confident with the basic shape of the toucan's head.
- 3). Sketch the body of the toucan by drawing an oval shape that connects to the head. Keep using light pencil marks in order to create a rough idea of how this particular bird will look on the paper.
- 4). Draw the branch and any other surrounding background pieces around the toucan at this time. Continue using light pencil marks.
- 5). Add detail to the toucan, starting with the head and bill and working down from this point. Lightly define certain areas to separate areas that will be colored differently once you reach this stage in the drawing. Study the reference photograph very carefully and concentrate on adding detail to small areas of the bird to avoid any rushed mistakes. Notice how the bird's feathers and different markings on the tree branch are represented in the picture.
- 6). Erase any pencil marks that are unnecessary during the detailing process. When you are confident that the detail is adequate and relative to the picture, proceed.
- 7). Color the different areas of the bird with the coloring utensils that you have. Erase any remaining pencil marks that you do not wish to include in the drawing at this time. Color the branch and erase these pencil marks as well.
- 8). Outline the bird and all of the major detailed areas with an ink pen. This effect will tie in the entire piece after it has been colored and create a bolder image.
