History
Some of Chicago's most notorious street gangs have members in Roseland. Many of these gangs splintered from a Chicago gang known as the Black Gangster Disciples. The Black Gangster Disciples formed in the 1970s, from a gang known as the Devil's Disciples.
Identification
In the late 1970s, three new gangs formed after breaking from the Black Gangster Disciples. These gangs are known as the Gangster Disciples, the Black Gangsters, and the Black Disciples.
Activities
Drug dealing is the main activity of the gangs in Roseland and other parts of Chicago. According to the National Gang Crime Research Center, some gangs also run gambling operations in public housing areas.
Famous Ties
In 1994, Roseland received some unwanted notoriety when an 11-year-old gang member, Robert "Yummy" Sandifer, was killed by members of his gang, the Black Disciples.
Aftermath
Two gang members, a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old, confessed to being at the scene at which Sandifer was shot execution-style.
