How to Care for Holley Bushes
- 1). Dig a hole the same depth and twice the diameter as the root ball of the holly bush. Amend the soil with 3 to 4 inches of organic compost to add nutrients and increase acidity.
- 2). Plant the holly bush at the same level it was previously growing and replace the soil around the roots. Pat down firmly to remove any air pockets.
- 3). Water until the soil around the bush feels very moist. Apply a 3- to 4-inch layer of organic mulch to control weeds and retain moisture.
- 4). Add moisture whenever the soil feels dry to the touch during the first growing season. During subsequent years the holly bush will only need watering during droughts and in late fall, before the first hard freeze.
- 5). Feed once each year with a slow-release granular fertilizer. Add a 1-inch layer of used coffee grounds once or twice during each growing season.
- 6). Add another 3- to 4-inch layer of organic mulch in early winter to protect the roots from cold temperatures.
- 7). Prune regularly to remove damaged or dead branches and maintain an attractive shape. The ideal time of year to prune holly bushes depends upon the variety planted, so it's best to check with a local nursery to determine when your type of holly bush should be pruned.
