How to Connect an External Hard Drive to a Router
- 1). Unplug your router and your external hard drive. Make sure they are close enough to be connected via your USB cable.
- 2). Connect one end of the USB cable to the router's USB port and the other to your external hard drive.
- 3). Turn on the router and hard drive as well as your computer.
- 4). Install your router's software. This step will vary based on the brand of router, but in most cases, you launch a setup file and answer a few questions and follow prompts onscreen that may include naming the drive and setting access limits. Consult your router's documentation.
