Cute T-Shirt Applique Ideas
- If you cannot wait until the weather gets cold to wear an old school letterman sweater or jacket, re-create the look on a T-shirt. Use actual letterman patches or make your own out of felt or wool. Layer two different sizes of the same letter to achieve the dual-colored effect characteristic of the embellishment. Cut a piece of fusible, iron-on fabric in the same size and shape as your letter piece. Place the fusible material under the between the letter and shirt, then iron over the letter to affix it to the tee.
- Cut illustrations out of printed cotton fabric to make iron-on embellishments for your shirt. Cut out single images from the fabric design. For example, cut single hearts out of an all-over Valentine hearts print. Cut pieces of fusible fabric to match the shape of each patch. Lay the trimmed illustrations on top of their corresponding adhesive piece. Place the images sporadically across the surface. Iron over them to bind the material to the shirt.
- Fashion rosettes out of ribbon for a decidedly feminine applique. Cut a 24-inch piece of ribbon. Work a threaded needle through the fabric in a running stitch along one edge of the ribbon until you stitch through the full 24 inches. Pull the thread to cinch the fabric into a ruffled floral shape. Secure the ends of the ribbon together with a small bead of hot glue. Stitch or glue the rosette to the T-shirt. Arrange a cluster of rosettes in various hues to create a striking tee.
- Trim the edges of the T-shirt with narrow bands of material. Stitch lace or ribbon along the neckline, sleeve hems or bottom hem of the shirt. Create a straight line or scalloped row of hot-fix rhinestones at the edges of the shirt. Secure the embellishments with a hot-fix tool or an iron. Add a second row of the ribbon or rhinestones above the initial row to add more drama to the shirt.
