Get Off the Grid - Uncertain Economic Times, Financial Stress Makes Alternative Energy, Gasification

7
Getting off the grid during these uncertain times has never been more important than today.
Our global economy means that when we fall all will fall.
During an emergency, clean water, energy, food, waste management and housing will be crucial to the sustainment of life.
Going green with renewable energy is like risk management in your portfolio to protect your family.
Gasification is an important alternative energy solution since it can use biomass like yard waste, human waste, basically anything that is living or was once living.
This technology would be a good solution during a time of crisis or just to go out camping in the wilderness and have a way to cook.
An interesting way to experiment with biomass gasification is to build your own small gasifier today.
That's where the modified inverted downdraft gasfiier "MIDGE" would be an ideal experiment to see and feel the power of gasification on a small scale.
The MIDGE as its called can be easily constructed with tin cans from household food stuffs.
For anyone new to gasification, I highly recommend these little projects.
For under $10 you should be able to generate gas and do a proof of concept.
When you are done, take your little experiment on a camping trip and fire up your next meal! How it works is simple.
Downdraft gasifiers require air to pass down through the biomass to work and this requires suction (usually provided by some kind of engine or blower).
In the inverted downdraft model, the air passes up through the biomass charge to the combustion-pyrolysis zone up at the top.
Our little gasification experiment uses the later design and eliminates the need for an extra component to work.
As the combustible gases pass out the top, they can be mixed with air and burned to emit a flame.
The MIDGE has been used to introduce people to alternative energy through gasification and to cook at a campsite.
PDF plans are available and the project is easy to do and it would be fun to build with your kids.
Anyone who is just looking for a finished product can also get the wood-gas camping stoves.
These little stoves are a life saver in an emergency.
They are also a great way to make biochar for your garden.
Going green and getting off the grid is important as we enter uncertain times.
The biomass that surrounds us can be utilized to power our lives and in an emergency save it.
Gasification as an alternative energy source that is a renewable energy powerhouse is important to explore.
The best way is to do it hands on.
