Guide To Shift Motorcycle Gears Appropriately
How to ride motorcycle properly, it has always been one of toughest tasks for riders but people who love riding learn it from different means. Amongst the prime most factors that play key role in riding is to maintain the balance on the bike, and then comes increasing and decreasing the speed according to the requirement and nature of the track. To increase the speed, rider needs to shift the gears from the lowest to highest and while reducing speed; the rider needs to decrease the gears from the highest to lowest. If the gear of the bike is not changed according to the speed, there are much chances of damaging the engine and bike's performance. Learning the right process of shifting the gears is must.
Steps Need To Consider Before Riding
There are certain steps that need to be taken into consideration so that one can learn the whole process with ease and perfection. Prior to the application of gear it is important to know that there are three main controls that help in operating the gear and switching the motorbike gears. Throttle, Clutch and Gear selector have their important role in switching motorcycle gears that can be switched from neutral, 1st, and 2nd and up to 5th and 6th gear. 6th gear is only applicable if the option is available in the motorbike. The throttle revs the engine of the motorbike, the clutch engages and disengages the transmission of the motorbike and gear selects and switches the gears of the bike. To put the motorbike into gear the rider needs to pull the clutch towards him with the left hand and this would rev the engine without moving the bike. In order to move the bike ahead in any direction you need to release the clutch slowly by the left hand, if the bike is in gear, else to neutral gear, so that the bike moves in the desired direction.
There is a set pattern of switching the gears that is needed to be followed in order to drive safely. The gear pattern is selected by tapping the gear paddle in the forward and backward direction. The gears in most of the motorbikes available in the market comprise of 6 gears that can be applied in the following patters
" 6th Gear (If Applicable)
" 5th Gear
" 4th Gear
" 3rd Gear
" 2nd Gear
" Neutral
" 1st Gear
This pattern is predefined and fix for all types of motorbike, and a standard for all the bikes observing the International standards set for the motorbikes. Shifting the motorbike gear requires following appropriate technique so as to avoid the seizure of motorbike engine and damaging the transmission. The switch the gear of the bike one needs to:
"Disengage the gear
"Select appropriate gear by using shift lever
"Rev the engine slightly
"Gradually release the clutch
"Feather the throttle while releasing the clutch to accelerate the bike
"Rev the engine for acceleration until the next shift of gear is required
"Follow the above steps while riding without disengaging the gear if moving, else adopt all the given steps.
To perform all these acts is easy but to do all this in smooth process requires practice.
