Blackberry mobile phones provide the convenience of having email and mobile web access at your fingertips--anywhere you get cell phone service. But those added features also come with a higher price tag. A 2008 survey by Berry Review indicated that the majority of Blackberry users spend $100 to $150 a month for their Blackberry cell phone service, while the average regular cell phone bill was $63 per month that same year, according to JD Power. Because Blackberry services are significantly more expensive than regular phone bills, consider a few tips to reduce your monthly bill. - Most cell phone service providers offer different plans and packages. The more expensive plans give you more minutes, text messages and other features, while the cheaper ones give you less. Downgrade to the cheapest plan possible to reduce your monthly bill. If you are on a plan that includes 1,000 minutes per month, downgrade to 450 minutes per month. Of course, you need to stick to the plan; if you go over your minutes allotment, you will end up paying a lot more. Since most carriers include free nights and weekends, make most of your calls during those free times, and save your regular daytime minutes for important calls only. You can use free services like email or instant message to stay in touch with people during the day, especially if you spend your day in front of a computer.
- Consider switching to an unlimited data plan. The unlimited plan likely costs more than limited plans, but if you go over your data allotment on a limited plan, you get hit with extra fees and charges. An unlimited plan allows you to use email and Internet on your Blackberry at anytime with no extra charges. That way, you can save money on other services. For example, send as many emails as you want on an unlimited data plan at no extra cost, and use email as oppose to text messages, which can add up quickly on your bill. Also, use the Internet on your phone to search for places as opposed to calling 411.
On the other hand, if you rarely use your email and Internet services on your Blackberry and pay for an unlimited data plan, consider downgrading to a limited plan, which is less expensive each month. Just be sure you do not go over your data allotment. - Check your plan carefully to see what extra features and hidden charges you are paying for, like caller ID, call forwarding and three-way calling. If any of these features are costing you extra money each month, call your provider and get rid of the extra features. Also, downloading fancy ringtones, apps or games on your Blackberry can add up as well. You pay a few dollars for the download, but often pay a monthly subscription fee as well. Stick to the free ringtones and apps; do not download anything extra.
