Propagation of Lavender Plants
- 1). Cut a lavender stem that has already bloomed and has no new buds growing. Make the cut with a knife approximately 6 inches from the top of the stem.
- 2). Cut off the top bloom and any leaves on the stem.
- 3). Plant the cutting in a tray filled with planting soil or perlite. Perlite is a volcanic material that affords small air tunnels that benefit air and water circulation. Place the tray out of direct sunlight.
- 4). Water the soil or perlite thoroughly, but do not completely saturate the bed. Feed the cutting every two days -- you can either pour water into the tray or mist water onto the stems.
- 5). Check for root development after three weeks. If you see new root growth, the cutting is successful; transplant it into a 2 1/2- or 3 1/2-inch pot. Once the cutting has produced 3 to 6 inches of new growth, transplant the plant again into the garden.
