How to Write on Fabric With Craft Paints

1
    • 1). Pick the type of fabric you want, but make sure it's a blend of natural and synthetic fibers, such as a cotton and polyester blend. Test a small amount of your craft paint on the back or side of the fabric, which lets you see how the color looks against it. Keep in mind that some colors look different when applied to a colored fabric.

    • 2). Wash the fabric before painting. It's important that you wash it first because if it shrinks later, it might mess up the look or design of your finished project. Set the fabric on a piece of cardboard, big enough to hold the writing area. Pin the fabric against the cardboard, to prevent the piece from moving and to give yourself a smooth surface.

    • 3). Sketch out your phrase using a charcoal pencil. This provides a design or guideline for writing on the fabric. Use a ruler to ensure that the words remain even across the surface of the fabric and that you have enough room for all the words.

    • 4). Practice your writing on a paper towel before moving to the fabric. Watch how the paint slides across the towel and look for any dripping or problems caused by your brush. Also, check how much pressure or speed you need when writing.

    • 5). Paint directly onto the fabric, using either an acrylic craft paint or a craft paint meant for fabric. Spray a small amount of water on the fabric to remove any of the charcoal left behind, but wait until the paint is completely dry. The paint removes all traces of the pencil.
