What is the Cause of Ringing Sounds in Ears?

1
A few months ago, I got in the stupid habit of using Q-tips in my ears every morning.
It just felt good at the time as I was experiencing mild allergies and it would alleviate the tickling in my ear (equivalent to scratching an itch I suppose).
Of course I was very careful, could not understand why there were so many warnings about not inserting objects in your ear until one morning when I made a wrong move and, ouch! I sure found out one cause of ringing sound in ears that I experienced for a couple of months afterward, accompanied by clicking sounds at every slight air pressure differences between my throat and the outside! In my case, I was lucky, the damage repaired itself in a few months with no sequel.
Everybody will experience ringing ears or tinnitus in one or both ears at one time, most of the time it is because the tiny auditory hairs, lining the sides of the cochlea are damaged or stressed after being bombarded by excessive noise (you know, concerts, gun range, motorcycle, etc...
) Other possible causes are infections, causing inflammation in the middle ear, eardrum or the bones (a cold for example).
Excess wax in the ear as well (although a normal amount is beneficial so no scrubbing in there).
Then there is head or brain injury, tumors or a structural defect in the ear itself.
Suffering from sinus and allergies will also make you susceptible to ringing ears.
Even certain foods like red wine, cheese and chocolate and food or medicines rich in salicylates (aspirin for example), in excessive quantities may lead to ringing ears.
Excessive stress along with poor health is also a cause of ringing sound in ears.
Whatever the cause however, it is imperative to procure a proper diagnostic and identify the cause(s) of ringing ears and 1) take proper precautions to protect your ears from further damage and 2) take the steps to alleviate or cure your tinnitus.
