Features of the Sumo Grande Launched in the Auto Expo in 2008
- Indian auto manufacturer Tata introduced the Sumo Grande SUV in 2008. The all-new multi-purpose vehicle joined the lineup below the Safari, offering a new diesel engine and seating for seven or nine passengers, depending on the trim model. Additional interior and exterior features were added in 2010 to create the Grande Mark II; although the Sumo name was dropped, the basic design and parts remain the same.
- The Grande Mark II is powered by a 2.2-liter, four-cylinder, turbo-diesel engine that uses direct injection and produces 120 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 180 foot-pounds of torque at 1,500 rpm. The engine uses a double overhead-cam configuration. A Grande Mark II Turbo is offered in some markets and it is powered by a 2.0-liter, direct-injection diesel that produces less power but improves fuel economy. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and the Grande Mark II is rear-wheel drive. Acceleration is improved over previous models by a shortened final-drive ratio.
- The styling has not changed significantly since the vehicle was introduced in 2008, but the Grande Mark II received an update in 2010 to accent the new name, adding mirror-mounted turn signals, body-colored side trim and a chromed grill. Inside, the Grande Mark II features new materials, cloth upholstery and three rows of seats. Comfort and convenience features include dual air conditioning, power mirrors, "puddle" lamps that illuminate the ground outside the vehicle at night, a tilt steering wheel, power windows with a one-touch down feature and a CD/MP3 player with an iPod port by Alpine. The driver's seat is height-adjustable on some models. A keyless entry system, rear wiper, rear defroster, side and rear steps, and fog lights are also available.
- The Grande Mark II features an independent front suspension with double wishbones and coil springs, and a leaf-spring rear suspension with a solid axle. Reviewers from the automotive press, including What Car? and Autocar India, have praised the comfortable ride offered by the Grande Mark II. The vehicle is equipped with disc brakes in the front and drums at the rear.
- Despite its burly looks, the lack of four-wheel drive suggests that the Grande Mark II is not intended as an off-road vehicle. The car-like 7-inch ground clearance bears this out. This vehicle measures 174.0 inches long, 70.7 inches wide and 76.4 inches tall, and it has an 88.6-inch wheelbase. The Grande Mark II weighs 5,787 pounds. The fuel tank has a 17.8-gallon capacity.
