Will Blue or Green Spruce Trees Grow in Zone 11?
- The blue spruce prefers a colder climate over a sub-tropical or tropical climate. The tree does well in USDA zones 2 to 8, but poorly in warmer zones. Zone 8 has a minimum winter temperature of 20 degrees F, while zone 9 rarely makes it below 30 degrees. The survival range for blue spruce does not include USDA zone 11.
- In USDA zones 2 to 8, the tree may reach up to 135 feet tall in the wild and spread up to 35 feet at maturity. Warmer climates may cause stunted growth if the tree survives at all. This tree is a slow grower that prefers colder climates over the warmer climate of zone 11.
- The Colorado Blue Spruce is native to the Rocky Mountains throughout the range from Arizona and New Mexico to the Canadian provinces. This native range includes USDA zones 2 to 7 in the US and Canada. Within its native habitat, the tree reaches it maximum height of 135 feet. Outside it's habitat, it will rarely exceed 50 feet in height. The tree is not expected to survive in zones greater than USDA zone 8, including USDA zone 11.
