Wilmington, North Carolina, with its proximity to the beach and its historic downtown on the Cape Fear River, has attracted numerous artists to the area. For those interested in pursuing an education in the arts, Wilmington has one good option. Beyond this, students will have to seek art colleges a little further away from the Carolina coast. - The University of North Carolina Wilmington is the only university in the town, but it offers several courses of study in the fine arts. Students here may earn their degree, or simply audit courses, in five departments: Art & Art History, Creative Writing, Film Studies, Music and Theater. In terms of visual art, a BA or a minor in Art History and a BA or minor in Studio Art are possibilities. The Creative Writing department offers an MFA and a BFA wherein students may study fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, screenwriting and publishing/editing.
The Department of Film Studies works closely with Screen Gems Studios in Wilmington, which is the largest studio not located in California. Students who pursue film may receive a BA in Film Studies. The Department of Music promotes student ensembles (i.e. in jazz or wind symphony) and offers a Bachelor of Music in Performance, a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Music.
