How to Check an Electric Fuel Pump on a Lawn Mower
- 1). Park the lawn mower on a hard, level surface and set the parking brake. Check that there is fuel in the gas tank.
- 2). Open the hood of the lawn mower and locate the fuel pump. Follow the fuel line directly back from the carburetor to the fuel pump. Disconnect the connector going into the fuel pump from the wiring harness. This will expose the connector pins. Place the oil drain pan under the carburetor.
- 3). Slide the fuel hose clamp on the inlet fuel line back, using the needle-nose pliers. Pull off the fuel line and direct it into the drain pan. Attach one of the alligator clips to the positive (+) post on the battery; attach the other end to one of the two connector pins on the fuel pump. Attach the other alligator clip to the negative (-) battery post, and touch the other end to the remaining connector pin on the fuel pump.
- 4). Watch the fuel coming from the end of the removed fuel line. The gas should be pulsing in a steady, hard stream. If fuel is not pumping or it's trickling out, you need to replace the fuel pump.
