How Can I Remove Myself From Mail Lists?

15
    • 1). Save all of your mail, as cumbersome as that might be, since your initial reaction is probably to toss it in the recycle bin. Set aside a special place for it and after about 30 days, go over who you need to contact. Categorize it, if need be. For example, have one pile be dedicated to those you don't remember signing up for and another be for those institutions that you might have trouble contacting.

    • 2). Register with an organization that aids in mailing list removal. The Direct Marketing Association, the Center for a New American Dream and Junkbusters are some of the more prominent ones that offer services either online or by written request. The DMA specializes in name purging from lists, while the latter two provide numerous form letters to send to companies. Plus, they offer information about companies that you may not know how to contact. (See References)

    • 3). Learn the ways to contact the mailers. Some are more nefarious than others and intentionally make it difficult to request removal. Keep at it, however, as most have correspondence addresses, phone numbers or websites with links that all deal with removal.

    • 4). Begin the contact process, either via phone, letter or email. This might take several attempts. Remain persistent --- most will eventually stop.
