Blanket Binding Crafts
- Blanket binding provides an elegant way to finish the edges of a blanket, or even to turn a simple piece of fleece into a blanket. Blanket binding is available in a variety of colors, materials and widths. It can be used to finish blankets made from fabric, or even lightweight quilts. Instructions for applying blanket binding are included with the binding. Consider using blanket binding to edge pillows, curtains or garments as well as blankets.
- Strips of blanket binding can be woven together to create a fabric which can be used in many different ways. You can mix blanket binding with ribbon, trim or fabric bias strips for variety. You could use the resulting woven "fabric" to make a pillow top, for example. Weave the fabric so that it is slightly larger than you expect the finished piece to be. Once weaving is complete, you can sew or tack the strips of binding to a base fabric for stability, or iron them to fusible interfacing for stability. Choose an interfacing that is lightweight.
- In addition to using blanket binding as bias tape, you can also think of it as ribbon. If you have made a blanket finished with blanket binding as a gift, tie the gift using blanket binding as a ribbon. Blanket binding can be appliqued onto fabric as a decorative element. Consider making a simple solid color fleece blanket trimmed with blanket binding, and making ribbon roses from the blanket binding as a decorative accent.
