How to Wire a Camper Shell
- 1). Use the test light to probe the wiring running to the brake lights. Have an assistant periodically depress the brake pedal so you can find the positive wire that triggers the brakes.
- 2). Cut the positive wire that you just found with the test light and strip both ends of the cut wire.
- 3). Crimp a butt-connector onto one end of the stripped wires using the crimping tool.
- 4). Cut a length of 16-gauge wire to the distance you need to run from the camper shell wiring to the cut wires.
- 5). Strip the end of the 16-gauge wire with the wire strippers.
- 6). Twist the end of the 16-gauge wire and the remaining cut end together and crimp them in the empty end of the butt connector using the crimping tool.
- 7). Strip the black wire leading out of the third brake light and crimp a ring terminal onto the end.
- 8). Drill a hole in the frame of the truck and run the black wire to the hole.
- 9). Drill the self-tapping screw into the frame, through the ring terminal. This will secure the wire and ground the light. Now the system should work correctly.
