How to Recover From Hip Surgery
- 1). Remain in bed for the first 24-48 hours following the procedure. Take your pain and blood-thinning medications as instructed and be sure to get plenty of rest.
- 2). Make your first trip to your physical therapist and perform the basic walking maneuvers and stretching exercises provided to you. Continue to take your pain medications as instructed by your doctor. When not performing these exercises, continue to use crutches or a walker to ensure the hip is not re-injured.
- 3). Follow your physical therapist's instructions regarding more advanced stretching and muscle-building exercises which will include stability ball, hip abductor, and hamstring maneuvers. Pain should continue to become less noticeable and the strengthened stability muscles should allow for easier walking and moving around.
- 4). Once physical therapy has ended, continue performing the list of strengthening exercises provided by your physical therapist to ensure that your hip continues to improve. Stay away from strenuous activity until your hip has fully recovered from the procedure.
