How to Green up Your Lawn
- 1). Mowing:
Here is what many golf course landscape professionals do when cutting greens. You can use this same technique on your lawn for great results.
1.) Cut your grass on a regular schedule, I suggest at least once a week.
2.) Don't cut your grass the same direction every week.
-Alternate directions on a weekly basis is key.
-If grass learns to grown only one way, it becomes weak and fragile.
-I suggest alternating in directions like a clock; from 12 to 6, from 3-9, from 10-4, and then from 8-2. Use a fixed position (your house) as 12 O'clock and then judge your directions from there.
[For example, if you cut your lawn today in a 12-6 direction, next week cut your lawn in a 3-9 direction. The week after that, cut your lawn in a 10-4 direction and so on.]
3.) Don't cut your grass too short. Depending on the mower type you have, set the blade height accordingly.
4.) Weed Eating or edging around your lawn does not make it any greener, but it does make your lawn look like it was professionally cut! - 2). Watering:
Of course, watering is ultimately what keeps your grass green. There are some things to remember when watering. Always water your lawn in the very early morning hours or late at night.
If you water mid-day or even in the late morning when the sun is hot, this can actually damage your lawn. The sun will heat up the water and actually burn your lawn's roots.
If you don't have a sprinkler system, invest in a sprinkler that covers a large area. Remember that you don't have to soak your lawn, about 5-10 minutes really is quite enough. - 3). Fertilizing:
Fertilizing is key for a healthy lawn. I suggest four times a year at the beginning of each season. A nice weed and feed is best for the Spring and Fall. During the Summer, use a Summer Guard to protect your lawns roots from the heat. Then in the Winter use a winterizer that will protect against the cold.
You will need a fertilizer spreader for this, either a push or hand-held will work. Do not use too much fertilizer. Read the bag carefully or else it will actually burn up your lawn.
Following all of these tips will ensure that your lawn will be healthy and green. Your neighbors will be quite jealous!!!
