How to House Train a Dog - A Few Basic Tips

2
One of the most asked questions you will hear around pet clubs is how to house train a dog.
Now whilst it is not rocket science there are a few techniques that work better than others.
In this article I want to share a few of those better techniques with you and hope that you will have the patience to follow through with them making life easier for you and your little furry best friend.
Many of you will have seen or heard the many different techniques on how to house train a dog.
Some can be a little cruel so I do not advocate any those techniques including the old favourite of rubbing your dogs' nose in his business.
Whilst dogs love nothing better than to sniff the rear end of each other, and some even eat the deposits of other dogs, rubbing your dogs' nose in his business can lead to all sorts of health problems for your friend.
Apart from the risk to your pets health, there is also the risk of causing damage to the nose as well as perhaps turning your pet into an angry bad behaving animal.
One of the first things you need to do when you are learning how to house train a dog is to exercise some patience.
If your dog is very young or older and set in his ways then you may need a lot of patience.
You have to expect a few mishaps along the way and the occasional accident.
You should also take responsibility for ensuring that your dog has the opportunity to go outside in the designated area and is not left locked inside and forced to do his business in an inappropriate location.
This moves me onto the next point.
You will need to establish an area for your dog to go.
For each home this location will be completely different.
Some dogs might have access to a large back yard and plenty of room to relieve themselves.
I would still however ensure that your dog is directed to one part of your yard so that you do not have little land mines all over your lawn.
For other dogs you may have to set up a place in the laundry on paper or teach the dog some control and insist he only relieves himself when you take him outside for a walk.
As a responsible pet owner you would obviously also take a bag with you so that unsuspecting innocent people are not surprised by the small annoying deposits that often litter the paths around my neighbourhood.
Your little friend should have a nice comfortable place to sleep that is kept clean and free of any waste from accidents that might occur.
Dogs are creatures of habits and like to relieve themselves in the same place whenever possible.
I am sure you have noticed dogs sniffing around the area before they do their business because they like to have that familiarity with where they go.
So make sure you thoroughly clean any areas you don't want your dog to go otherwise he may be tempted to go there again.
Some people keep their dogs inside all the time whilst others keep them outside or only allow the dog to sleep inside at night.
However you decide to keep your dog, in the initial stages particularly, you will need to constantly take your dog to the area you have chosen for him to do his business.
One of the best ways to do this is to put him on a lead and walk him to that area at least every hour or so until he realises that is where he is expected to go.
It will not be long before our dog is standing at the door indicating to you that it is time to go and he needs your assistance to go to the designated spot.
Your dog will need to be coaxed into going to the toilet where you want him to.
Walk your dog around the area where you want him to go, on the lead, and encourage him to go to the toilet.
If you manage to get him to go then please encourage him and ensure he knows he is a good boy for doing what you wanted.
You might even consider giving your dog a reward.
Providing a reward is one of the best things you can do as you learn how to house train a dog.
Heaps lots of praise and make sure you really over state your encouragement.
If your trip on this occasion does not bring the desired result simply leave it for a little while and try again.
If you repeat the process every 20 to 30 minutes you will get the desired result eventually.
If your dog makes a mistake then make sure you don't lose your cool, just ignore it and ignore the dog.
If you don't praise him he will soon get the idea of where he needs to go to get the praise and rewards he wants so badly from you.
If you recall at the start of this article I recommended that you exercise some patience.
This process might take some time to get the correct result so your patience may be stretched from time to time, but sooner or later your mate will get the message.
The length of time can vary breed to breed and dog to dog so there is no real time frame in my opinion.
Just be persistent and consistent and you will both be much happier with each other and things around the home will be a lot cleaner and more pleasant on the nose.
So there you go.
A few simple tips on how to house train a dog.
As I said they are not rocket science and really only take a little persistence on your part as well as a little encouragement to get you little mate to do exactly what you want where you want it to happen.
