    History

    • The first official Polaris snowmobile dates back to January1956 but the company began their snowmobile journey in 1955. Polaris considered itself to have the first functional snow machine of its kind, which helped farmers and utility company crews reach winter destinations easier. At the time, those in rural, snow-laden terrains used cross-country skies or snowshoes to get from point A to point B. In 2001, the 600 XC SO snowmobile won the coveted, "Snowmobile of the Year" award. The 2005 Polaris 600 XC SP combined 50 years of snowmobile research and development and marked the release of a 50th Anniversary edition.

    Engine & Transmission

    • The standard 600 XC SP and 50th Anniversary edition had the same engine and transmission. Powered by a 599cc horizontal in-line, 2-stroke, liquid-cooled, 2-cylinder carbureted motor, riders had access to quick acceleration and ample power. Ignited with a pull starter, the engine had a reed valve configuration with 64 mm stroke and 77.24 mm bore. Exhaust flowed through a VES, single exhaust pipe. The transmission could switch into reverse with a P-85/TEAM clutch. Hydraulic disc brakes slowed the XC SP.

    Technical Specifications

    • Both models of the 2005 Polaris 600 XC SP also had the same technical specifications with a length of 9.42 feet, width of 48 inches and height of 46 inches. Without gas, it weighed 482 lbs and had a maximum fuel capacity of 11.8 gallons. The ski stance was 42.5 mm. The track had a length of 121 inches, width of 12 inches and lug height of .91 inches. In 2005, the MSRP was $7,249 for the standard model and $7,899 for the 50th Anniversary edition.

    Suspension

    • Categorized as a sport performance snowmobile, the 2005 600 XC SP was capable of aggressive riding partly because of the suspension. The front suspension featured Ryde FX, HPG, IFP shocks that could travel up to 262 mm. The rear suspension type was EDGE and had a 353 mm of travel.

    Features

    • The 50th Anniversary model came in a blue with white and silver accents compared to the standard model that came in black with red and silver accents. Each featured skies made of composite and carbide skag material. For riding comfort, heated hand grips came standard. Designed for single rider, the XC SP does not have a passenger seat.
