Traffic School

• Texas legislation allows speeders to take a six-hour, driving-safety course in a classroom, through a DVD or online. The offender receives a certificate after completion, and the courts will usually dismiss the ticket. Participants may dismiss only one ticket per year.
  
  

Limits

• Texas legislation addresses legal-maximum speeds depending on specific locales. As of 2010, a person cannot drive over 15 mph on a beach or in an alley. She may not exceed 30 mph in an urban district. She may not driver over 60 mph during the day, or over 55 mph at night on non-numbered highways. On numbered highways, The maximum limits are 70 mph during the day and 65 mph at night on numbered highways.
  
  

Fines

• Fines vary depending on the jurisdiction. As of November, 2010, Harris County fines range from $130 to $280. The city of Austin charges $143 to $301, depending on the speed. Speeding in a school zone or a construction zone with workers present enhances fines.
