Store Credit Vs. Return Vs. Exchange

    • A straight return with item and receipt is the simplest type of return-related transaction. With a receipt, it is also possible to exchange an item for a similar item. If you've lost your receipt your options are limited. At some stores, it is possible to exchange an item in good condition without a receipt for store credit, equal to the purchase amount of the item and usually issued in the form of a plastic gift card. At Macy's and other retail stores store credit is often issued for items purchased online and returned to a physical store location.

    Return Policies

    • Return policies vary by store and, in some cases, by item. Many electronics stores and stores that sell high-end electronics charge a restocking fee for all returns. At Walmart and other major retailers, items purchased at a store can be returned at the same store within 90 days for a full refund, provided that you have a receipt. When faced with a restocking fee, or when attempting to return something with a receipt, store return policies become slightly more complicated.

    Non-returnable and Non-refundable Items

    • At many stores, including physical and online locations, opened software packages, electronics items and special-ordered or personalized items are non-refundable and/or non-returnable. The list of these items varies, but can also include: perishable items, funeral products, gift cards and electronic music downloads.

    Save Your Receipt

    • It goes without saying that saving your receipt is the best way to make sure that you are able to return, exchange or receive a refund. With a receipt and the item in hand you have a much better chance of achieving your desired outcome. Without a receipt, store credit may be your only option.

    Contact the Store

    • Visiting the customer service of a store's website will provide you with general information about returns and store credit information, but for specific inquiries it is best to speak to contact the store in person before visiting or attempting to return an item purchased online.
