Environmentally Friendly Cleaning Products
In the United States we have become crazy clean about our homes. We work to rid ourselves from dirty toilets, counters, carpets, and laundry. We scrub, wash, rinse and wash again. If that's not enough, we use bleach and detergent mixed with bleach, fabric softener, whitener, disinfectant, and disinfectants that smell like perfume and not like disinfectants. We pour them down our drains and fill our waterways with all kinds of chemicals which we then consume in our food supplies and in the air that we breathe. The question is how do we find environmentally friendly cleaning products.
For instance in looking for brushes and things of that nature, we usually are satisfied with plastic bristles. However, they are not really part of the group of environmentally friendly clean products because most of the plastic items we use are not biodegradable and so they wind up in our landfills. They are brushes that use agave fibers which are strong and good at scouring and removing touch stains from pots and pans as well as appliances. A great source of information as to which products meet the standards that we're looking for in environmentally friendly cleaning products can be found in a list from the Environmental Working Group which ranks about twenty five hundred products. Everything from pet products to air fresheners is listed by this organization. They give items an €A€ to €F€ ranking and most products that fall into the first two letters of the alphabet can be considered pretty safe.
Some items get poor grades because the manufacturer will not disclose what's in them. Many bathroom cleaners get €F€s because they are really bad for the environment. People want to know. More of us are buying electric cars or hybrids and are concerned about the use of fossil fuels and their effect on global warming. Others of us are investing wisely into solar panel systems for our home energy use. We also need to be concerned about those environmentally friendly cleaning products that affect our drinking water, our oceans, and our fresh water rivers and streams. Once these cleaning products go down our drains, we don't really know what they affect they will have on our health, food supplies, and the air that we breathe.
