Yale Deadbolt Lock Removal

    Tools Needed

    • Although removing a Yale deadbolt may seem daunting at first, usually all is needed for its removal is a Phillips screwdriver to remove the retaining screws from the lock cylinder housing and from the latch plate. A flatblade screwdriver may be needed to pry a stubborn latch plate from the edge of the door once the screws are removed.

    Types of Deadbolts

    • A Yale deadbolt usually comes in one of two types. A deadbolt lock that is keyed on both sides may offer the most protection. If an intruder should happen to break the door glass to reach in and unlock the door from the inside, his attempt may be foiled with a dual-keyed lock. This type of lock may not be the safest for the homeowner in the event of a fire or other emergency where the occupants need to exit the building quickly and cannot find the key. The other type of lock solves this problem as it is only keyed on the outside and has a thumb lever on the interior of the door.

    Lock Assembly Removal

    • Open the door so that you can access both sides of the lock to be removed more easily. Locate the two screw heads showing on the face of the door lock assembly on the interior of the door. Remove the screws in a counterclockwise direction with a Phillips screwdriver. Note that on single-keyed locks you may need to rotate the thumb lever to access the screw heads fully. Pull the two halves of the dead bolt assembly from each side of the door.

    Latch Removal

    • Locate the two screws in the latch face plate on the edge of the door that secures the latch assembly to the door. Remove the screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Slide the latch assembly straight out of the edge of the door. Carefully pry at the latch plate on the edge of the door to remove it with a flatblade screwdriver if necessary.

    Assembly Tips

    • The Yale deadbolt can be installed in the reverse order of removal. Ensure that the tail piece on the exterior half of the lock assembly is inserted correctly into the hole in the latch assembly before screwing the halves together.
