Gardening - Good for the Planet, Good for Your Health?

Many gardeners feel that gardening is a great way to de-stress, and to get in a moderate amount of exercise while doing something they truly enjoy.
There are many sites devoted to gardening, and within them you will find that avid gardeners are truly passionate about the process, as well as the outcome, of gardening.
I am going to talk about some of the benefits of gardening.
One important benefit is stress relief.
There are many illnesses related to having too much stress in one's life.
Heart disease, chronic fatigue, anxiety attacks, mood swings, depression, as well as susceptibility to cold and flu causing viruses are all related to having too much stress.
There are other issues as well, such as heart disease and sleep problems.
Gardening is a way to relieve some of that stress, do something productive with your hands, and see the fruits of your labor (at times, literally!).
A second benefit is that gardening can be organic, and therefore better for your health.
Many pesticides have been found on our produce, and the EPA has a list of pesticides that are legal for use on crops, as well as what the safe amount of pesticide residue can be in and on our foods.
Even though the residue on our fruits and vegetables are below the standards set by the EPA, we do not know the long-term consequences of consuming all those toxins have on our bodies.
Gardening is a great way to grow one's own produce, and use environmentally friendly methods to do so.
Instead of synthetic pest control sprays, you can use organic sprays.
Runoff from your garden into water supplies are non-existent or minimal.
A third benefit is exercise.
Yes, gardening can be considered a form of exercise! For those with joint problems and for those of us with older bodies (not OLD bodies!), we can do something as relaxing and simple as gardening for our health.
You can burn off calories by digging and planting, as well as weeding the lawn.
Everyone knows how difficult weeds can get! By being a little active every day, you will be able to get some fresh air and burn off those calories! The fourth benefit to gardening is one of the most important- enjoyment.
Many gardeners love to be a part of nature, to have a hand in seeing something grow and flourish within their care, and to be able to see a process through from start to finish.
This in and of itself can be very rewarding.
Enjoyment, stress relief, and health benefits are just some of the many reasons that gardening, even hydroponics gardening, is such a great way to spend one's time.
It can also help our planet become a healthier place by lessening the amount of pesticides in our environment.
