- 1). Look for shopping sites and forums on the Internet. There are a number of deal forums dedicated solely to helping people find computer deals, and you may be able to save a lot of money by watching for deals on the components you need.
- 2). Ask your friends and co-workers if they have any computers they need to get rid of. If a colleague has a failed computer, you can remove the components from that computer and use the case to build your own PC. Otherwise keep an eye out for deals on computer cases, which are often on sale for as little as $20 to $30.
- 3). Choose a motherboard that combines quality and value. You may be able to find a clearance motherboard that is very good but does not contain the latest technology. If you just need a basic computer, you do not need to have a super fast processor, so these bargain motherboards can be a good deal. Insert the motherboard in the case and fasten it securely.
- 4). Look for sales on memory modules at your local big-box store or an Internet retailer. You can determine how much memory your motherboard supports by visiting the website of the motherboard manufacturer. To install the memory, locate the memory slots on the motherboard, push down the white retaining clips and push down on the memory module until it snaps into place. Make sure the white retaining clips come up to hold the module in place.
- 5). Choose a good hard drive, but shop around for the best price. Hard drive prices have been falling, so you should be able to find one with a good storage capacity for less than $50. Insert the hard drive in the bay, secure it with screws and connect the cables to the back of the drive and the motherboard.
- 6). Check the prices of DVD burners to make sure they fit your budget. The prices of burners have come down a great deal, and you may even be able to find one on clearance at your local electronics store. If a DVD burner is still too expensive, a standard DVD-ROM drive should set you back less than $20. Slide the DVD drive into the bay, secure it with the screws and connect the cables to the back of the drive and to the system's motherboard.
