Stuart is an inventor and has found a way to go back in time.
To prove this, he goes to a ball and takes pictures.
Leopold, who is a Duke is supposed to name a bride that night.
He sees Stuart and decides to talk to him since he looks very suspicious.
Stuart runs to a bridge.
Leopold follows.
Stuart jumps and so does Leopold, which makes them go back to the future.
Leopold passes out and Stuart takes him back to his apartment for the night.
In the morning Stuart tells Leopold what has happened to him and tells him not to go outside.
He then goes and walks the dog.
Stuart falls down the elevator since the doors opened without the elevator.
Stuart breaks both legs and is hospitalized.
Kate, Stuarts ex-girlfriend drops by to get the stick for her palm pilot.
She discovers Leopold in the process.
She thinks that he is crazy since he is claiming to be from the past.
Kate's brother Charlie also drops by and thinks that Leopold is the greatest thing ever since he is trying his luck in theater and he believes that Leopold is only acting.
Soon Kate and Leopold become friends.
He even makes dinner for Kate and Charlie.
This is where he accepts the job of making a commercial for butter at Kate's company.
Kate goes to dinner with her boss to talk about the business and a promotion for her.
Charlie convinces Leopold to go with him and say hi.
Everything turns out very wrong.
Leopold is very honest with her boss on his intentions and thinks it is slimy.
The next day he apologizes to Kate for embarrassing her and asks her to go tour New York with him.
They go on a carriage ride.
When the ride is over a man runs by and steals Kate's purse.
Leopold borrows the horse from the carriage and gets the purse back.
Kate is beginning to think that he really is a Duke.
He then shows her his house that he grew up in.
Since it is now a museum it is OK to go in.
He then pulls out a ring from a place in the wall.
Now Kate is really believing Leopold.
They finish the day with a romantic dinner on the roof.
A violinist is there and they dance after dinner.
Stuart is finally let out of the hospital just in time to get Leopold back to his time.
Stuart then gives the pictures that he took to Kate and tells her that if she loves him that she must go back before midnight.
