How to Remove Dead Algae From a Pop-Up Pool
- 1). Turn off the pool pump.
- 2). Add pool cleaner to the pool water in the amount prescribed by the pool cleaner manufacturer. Aluminum Sulfate should serve for the removal of dead algae, as will any other flocculent. Mix the pool cleaner with water in a bucket dissolving the cleaner completely. Pour the mixed cleaner into the pool, adding it to the pool water at the sides of the pool and in the center to get an even distribution. Use the pool pump to help distribute the cleaner until the water is well mixed. Turn off the pump, and let the cleaner work overnight. The cleaner will draw the dead algae to the bottom of the pool where you can remove it as waste.
- 3). Set the pool filter to "waste." Use a pool vacuum broom to remove the dead algae from the bottom of the pool. Submerge the vacuum into the pool at the edge and then turn the vacuum on. Move the vacuum broom across the bottom of the pool slowly, removing the dead algae and other debris from the pool. Make sure you move the other end of the vacuum to an area where the debris from the bottom of the pool can be safely disposed.
- 4). Turn off the vacuum broom and remove it from the pool.
- 5). Turn the filter to "Backwash" and turn on the pool pump, allowing the pump to clear any algae dispersed through the pool water.
- 6). Remove the old filter material in the pool filter and replace it with new material, and then turn the filter to "Filter". Use the same filter material, for example sand or a cartridge filter, as was present in the pool.
- 7). Refill the pool with fresh water and then turn on the pump to resume normal usage of the pool.
