PKU, or phenylketonuria, is a genetic disorder that blocks the body's ability to break down an amino acid called phenylalanine, which is found in protein. The build-up of phenylalanine can cause brain damage. Today, all babies born in the United States are routinely screened for PKU (phenylketonuria), at birth.
