How to Get a Birth Certificate for a Child Born on a U.S. Military Installation
- 1). Look online at USembassy.gov for a list of websites to find the U.S. embassy or consulate nearest to your home, and bookmark it.
- 2). Download and complete State Department Form DS-2029, Consular Report of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the United States of America. (See Resources section). Do not sign it; it will not be accepted unless you sign it in front of a U.S. consular officer at a U.S. embassy or consulate.
- 3). Obtain a certified birth certificate for your child (or other official document establishing the details of birth) issued by the foreign government in which the military installation is located. Ideally, this document should include a raised seal.
- 4). Prepare evidence to establish the U.S. citizenship of at least one of the child's parents. A current passport is sufficient, as is a Certificate of Naturalization or a birth certificate proving that the parent was born in the United States.
- 5). Document the exact dates of residence and physical presence in the United States of the U.S. citizen parent and have it notarized at a U.S. embassy or consulate. The U.S. citizen parent must present a photo ID, preferably a passport, and sign this statement in the presence of the notary public.
- 6). Obtain a marriage certificate or other official document establishing the parents' marriage, if they are married or were married when the child was born.
- 7). Make an online appointment to present your application with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate, Citizen Services Division.
- 8). Prepare a fee of $65 in cash or certified funds (not a personal check). You may pay in local currency.
- 9). Bring Form DS-2029 together with the fee and supporting documentation to your appointment. Sign Form DS-2029 in front of a U.S. consular official. You should be issued a Consular Report of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the United States of America on the same day.
