Life Of Caesar Chavez

35
Cesar Estrada Chavez lived from March 31, 1927 - April 23, 1993 and he lived a very fruitful life dedicated to helping the plight of farm workers in California and across the nation.
Chavez showed the public his heart for the farm workers by living his life in poverty even after he became famous and could have taken a large salary.
During one of Chavez's 25 day fasts he wrote a speech about Mexican's and the American church.
"That Church is one form of the Presence of God on Earth, and so naturally it is powerful.
It is powerful by definition.
" Cesar believed that the Church is a very powerful organization that greatly aids the community with spiritual means, but he also believed that they had a lot of work to do in benefiting the community as a whole.
When talking about the church Cesar said that "it is an organization with tremendous wealth.
Since the Church is to be servant to the poor, it is our fault if that wealth is not channeled to help the poor in our world.
" It may seem that Chavez thinks the church has a lot of excess money that they could be putting to better use and for some churches that is true.
He urged the churches of his day to reach out to the poor not just to give them spiritual guidance but to also give them economic aid.
Furthermore Chavez points out the authority that the church wields and the clout that goes with it.
He gives several examples of the good that can be accomplished when the farm workers cause is championed by the local religious leaders.
"It is not just our right to appeal to the Church to use its power effectively for the poor, it is our duty to do so.
It should be as natural as appealing to government...
and we do that often enough.
" By bringing their problems to the Government and not looking to the church to aid them in their troubles the farm workers seemed to place more faith in the Government to save them than in the power of the church.
Finally Chavez closes with this "we ask the Church to sacrifice with the people for social change, for justice, and for love of brother.
" He did not want the Mexican people to ignore the power of the Church and the great aid that they can offer.
