- Start off by getting your pet used to the sound of the clicker.
To do this, stand in front of him/her and click the clicker, followed immediately by giving a treat.
After you are certain your pet understands that a click equals a treat, go to the next level.
Use a marker stick (wooden dowel with colored tape at one end, and hold it out in front of you.
Your pet will most likely touch the stick with its nose to smell it.
Click at the exact moment the nose touches to teach him/her that now he/she needs to figure out how to make your click the clicker.
Continue this until your pet knowingly touches the marker with its nose in order for you to click and give a treat.
