    License and ID Requirements

    • To obtain an Illinois driver's license or non-driver ID card, the applicant must visit a driver services facility and present proof of name, age, residency and Social Security number. A list of acceptable documents is available on the Cyberdriveillinois website. Driver's license applicants must complete a written test, vision screening, and possibly a driving test depending on prior licensing status.

    Renewal and Retesting

    • All drivers renewing their licenses (required every four years) must pass a vision test. Those with traffic convictions must pass a written test at least once in eight years. Citizens over 75-years-old must pass a driving test with each renewal, and renewals become more frequent: every other year for those 81- to 86-years-old, every year for drivers 87-years-old and older,

    Suspended Licenses

    • Drivers whose licenses are suspended may apply for restricted driving privileges by requesting a hearing before an informal hearing officer, who will review the individual's driving record in light of the applicable laws and regulations. Informal hearing officers are located at Secretary of State locations. Hearings are held on a first-come, first-served basis.
