How to Install a Stationery Valance on Roman Shades
- 1). Look under your Roman shade and look up. If your Roman shade is handmade, you will see a piece of wood. If your Roman shade is commercially made, you will see a metal bracket that may have a wood face (depending on the manufacturer). Your Roman shade also will be mounted inside the window casing or outside. If you have an inside mount, then your valance will attach to the front. If you have an outside mount then your valance will wrap around the sides and attach to the front.
- 2). Measure the width of an inside mounted shade. Cut hook-and-loop tape to this length. Select an adhesive backed hook tape if you are mounting to a header-style Roman shade. Remove the paper backing, and press the hook tape along the top front edge of the header. If your top is a wood batten, add staples every 3 to 4 inches to firmly attach the hook tape to the top of the shade.
- 3). Measure the width of an outside mounted shade. Measure each side where the shade header or batten wraps back to the window frame or casing. Add the measurements together. Cut hook-and-loop tape to this length. Select an adhesive backed hook tape if you are mounting to a header-style Roman shade. Remove the paper backing and press the hook tape along the side and top front edges of the header. If your top is a wood batten, add staples every 3 to 4 inches to firmly attach the hook tape to the top of the shade.
- 4). Select a valance that matches the width and length of the hook-and-loop tape. Pin the loop portion of the tape 1/2-inch from the the top edge along the back side of the valance. Sew the loop portion of the tape to the fabric using two seams sewn in the same direction.
- 5). Attach the valance to the shade by pressing the hook and loop tapes together.
