• 1). Log onto the U.S. Department of State's Travel.State.Gov website at least one month before your departure date. Select "Visas" from the site's horizontal navigation bar. Click on "Americans Traveling Abroad" from the list on the left side of the page.
  
  
• 2). Choose "Country Specific Information" below the informational paragraph. Select the country to which you will be traveling from the countries list and click "Go."
  
  
• 3). Click on "Entry/Exit requirements." The listing will tell you what visas, if any, you will be required to have to enter and exit the country.
  
  

Contact the Embassy or Consulate

• 1). Locate the embassy contact information on projectvisa.com. Most foreign countries with representatives in the United States maintain an embassy in Washington, D.C. and a consular office in larger American cities like New York City, Chicago and San Francisco.
  
  
• 2). Contact the embassy or consular office of the country in which you will be traveling and ask the consular officer what the visa requirements are, how long it will take to get one and its cost.
  
  
• 3). Go to the embassy or consular office and fill out the paperwork for a visa request. Expect to pay from $50 to $100 for a visa. If you cannot go in person, mail your passport, visa-request paperwork and payment to the embassy. Allow enough time for it to be mailed, processed and returned to you before your departure date.
